Pumping systems account for 20% of global industrial electricity consumption. Small efficiency gains translate to significant cost savings.
Pump systems are major energy consumers. Here are 10 proven ways to improve efficiency:
1. Right-size the pump
Oversized pumps waste energy and wear faster. Select a pump whose BEP matches your actual operating point.
2. Use Variable Speed Drives (VSD)
VSDs adjust motor speed to match demand. Reducing speed by 20% cuts power consumption by nearly 50% (affinity laws).
3. Minimize pipe friction losses
Use larger diameter pipes, minimize bends and fittings, and keep pipes clean.
4. Maintain mechanical seals
Worn seals increase leakage and reduce efficiency. Replace seals on schedule.
5. Replace worn impellers
Impeller wear increases clearances and reduces efficiency. Monitor performance and replace when efficiency drops >5%.
6. Optimize system pressure
Reduce system pressure setpoints to the minimum required. Every 10m of unnecessary head wastes energy.
7. Use parallel pumps for variable demand
Instead of one large pump at partial load, use multiple smaller pumps that can be switched on/off as needed.
8. Eliminate throttling valves
Throttling wastes energy. Use VSD instead of control valves where possible.
9. Fix leaks immediately
System leaks force pumps to work harder. A 1% leak can increase energy consumption by 2–3%.
10. Monitor and benchmark
Install flow meters and power meters. Track specific energy consumption (kWh/m³) and set improvement targets.
